One of the most basic, essential questions asked by those considering having the vasectomy procedure is: How does it work?
Because of the many myths and misconceptions surrounding the procedure, the facts about what it actually is can be tough to discern without some research. At the San Diego Vasectomy Center (SDVC), we understand patients’ hesitation to undergo a vasectomy, especially if they don’t understand what’s involved.
Are there different types of vasectomies?
There are different methods of performing the procedure, but all have the same result. At the San Diego Vasectomy Center, we utilize the no needle no scalpel method.
How does a no needle no scalpel vasectomy work?
Your vasectomy surgeon will administer what is known as hypospray, which numbs the operating area on contact. The surgeon will then create a tiny opening to lift the vas deferens out of the scrotum, cut them, tie them and return them. Only this one incision is made during the no scalpel method. Because this opening is so small, no stiches or sutures are needed once the procedure is complete. The location of the vas deferens is determined prior to the procedure. The entire vasectomy usually takes around 10 minutes, but can take as long as 30 minutes in some cases.
How does this differ from a traditional vasectomy?
As opposed to the no needle no scalpel method, the surgeon in a traditional vasectomy will create 1-2 incisions in the scrotum to expose the vas deferens on both testicles. At the end of the procedure, both ends of the vas deferens are closed with stitches.
Is the traditional vasectomy method performed at SDVC?
No, Dr. Martin Bastuba only performs the no needle no scalpel method. This method is just as effective as the traditional approach but offers patients an easier recovery period. Most no needle no scalpel patients report mild discomfort and some swelling in the hours and days post-procedure, and can return to normal activities (with the exception of heavy lifting) within just 2-3 days.
How much does a vasectomy cost?
Most patients find that a vasectomy is covered under their insurance plan, though some of the cost may be directed to the patient, depending on his coverage. For those patients without insurance, a vasectomy at SDVC will typically cost $950 ($750 for the procedure and $200 for the consultation).
