The vasectomy experience isn’t supposed to be mysterious — it’s a very straightforward (and quick!) procedure that requires very little from the patient in terms of preparation and recovery. However, some men still don’t know the basics of how the procedure is done and what kind of effect it will have.

It’s easy to prepare for a vasectomy
We’ve composed an entire blog post dedicated to questions men ask about vasectomy prep. Essentially, preparing for a vasectomy just comes down to planning — but not very much. Knowing what you’ll wear to ensure comfort post-procedure, having a dependable form of transportation home, planning to take a couple of days off from work and refraining from heavy lifting are all you need to keep in mind while planning. Most normal activity, including sexual intercourse, can resume 3-4 weeks after the procedure. Your vasectomy surgeon can provide more specific details on your expected recovery timeframe, if needed.
During the vasectomy
SDVC utilizes the No Needle No Scalpel vasectomy, which offers patients a virtually pain-free experience. The anesthetic Exparel is used to provide long-lasting pain relief and only a tiny incision is required to perform the procedure safely and effectively. This incision is so small that you will not need stitches — it will heal naturally on its own. The entire procedure can last as little as 10 minutes but typically takes up to 30 minutes. Patients typically wake up from anesthesia feeling a little sleepy or groggy but otherwise fine.
Once you arrive at home
Once home, your job as a vasectomy patient is to simply rest comfortably. Many patients apply a bag of frozen peas to the incision site during recovery to reduce any initial soreness. It’s important to avoid sex, exercise and heavy lifting until your vasectomy surgeon gives the OK. Our patients have reported back to us that getting a tattoo creates more discomfort than getting a No Needle No Scalpel vasectomy!
