In part one of our blog posts on Questions Men Ask After A Vasectomy, we addressed the fact that there is some discomfort after the procedure, but it should be quite minimal for most men. We also discussed that post-procedure, most men are able to return to their normal daily routines relatively soon after the vasectomy and that sexual intercourse can usually resume a week after the procedure. In part II, we will answer the following questions in order to help ease the minds of those who are nervous about having a vasectomy:

How effective is a vasectomy?

Vasectomies are very effective and can boast success rates of 99%. Vasectomies are also safe. Once more, it’s important to remember that a vasectomy is not immediately effective. It can take up to several weeks, even 2-3 months for semen to successful test for having a zero sperm count.  After a zero sperm count is confirmed, your doctor will give the go-ahead for intercourse without additional birth control methods.

How much will a vasectomy cost?

Compared to other surgical procedures (tubal ligation) and the costs of other long-term birth control options, a vasectomy is relatively inexpensive. Typically, the cost of a vasectomy is in the range of $500-$1,000. Cost can vary depending on a few factors: insurance coverage, geographic location, which technique is used, and et cetera.  Are there any side effects of a vasectomy?

The types of potential side effects are dependent on which method of vasectomy procedure is performed. If the vasectomy is performed surgically, there is a risk of infection. Post-procedure, there is a risk of: bleeding, mild pain and/or discomfort, swelling, and other complications.

Having a vasectomy is a safe and effective form of birth control. It’s important not to rule out a vasectomy just because of misplaced worry and misconceptions. There are a wide variety of vasectomy resources available for more information on the procedure.

My experience with having my vasectomy done by Dr. Bastuba was very positive. The appointment was easy to schedule and I had no issues using my insurance. The procedure itself was quick, and the pain was minimal . I felt that Dr. Bastuba communicated very well with me to ensure that I was comfortable. And, by following the post-surgery directions, I think I was able to keep the pain to minimum as well as the recovery time. It was definitely worth the results.
